Chapter 5

If You Ask Me Politely

Niamh called early on Sunday morning. Sierra, who had come down to get some tea, answered the phone before I could get to it.

“Hey, Niamh. You might not recognize me, but I'm Sierra, Beatrice's best mate.” I tried to grab the phone but she deftly turned her back and continued to evade my frantic attempts. “No, she's right here, scrambling to get the phone, so she doesn't want me to reveal all her dirty secrets to you. Emergency! Emergency! Please assist! She's launching a vicious assault on me right now. She's really mean to me because I'm so tiny. She’s punching me, causing large wounds, and now she's pulling my hair out and squeezing my shoulder. Allow me to go, you huge bully!”

Sierra flipped me the phone with a grin, finally tired of her games.

“I hope you didn't believe all that nonsense Niamh, because if you did, a certain little individual is in big trouble.”

Niamh was giggling. “Sierra seems like a lot of fun.”

“Yes, if she stays long enough, you might grow to like her.” I locked my gaze on the mischievous little individual who had flopped onto the couch, snickering to herself.

“Anyway, Beatrice, it's looking like a good warm day, so I was wondering if you wanted to join me at Holcombe Park. We should plan a nice day out and have lunch at one of the restaurants.”

“...can we get Tex-Mex?” I asked.

Niamh’s contented chuckle spilled from the phone. “That's just what I was trying to say,” Niamh said.

“Maybe we should split a plate of their nachos…” I said.

“...the ones with melted cheese and sliced chilies…”

“...with a sour cream dip and maybe their enchiladas, which…”

“...are the finest in town,” Niamh concluded, “Okay. 11 a.m. at the main gate.”

I hung up the phone feeling like I was dancing on air. Sierra spotted it too. “You'd best consider taking an anchor around with you before you float away," she said, before her voice became lower, more serious, “I believe you've found the one now, Beatrice.”

Sierra was right of course but... “I've only known her two days,” was my weak protest. “I don’t believe in love at first sight. It just doesn’t happen. At least not to me.”

Sierra sighed and drew me to the sofa behind her. “Beatrice, don't be so pessimistic,” she said, taking both of my hands in hers. “It doesn’t matter how long you've known her; I've never seen you so enamored with another girl before. Joanna and I both realized the moment we met each other in The Twilight Times that we'd found the one, and it seems you and Niamh are the same. So go spend the day with her, and I dare you to come home and tell me I'm wrong.”

I took a short shower and smoothed my legs and underarms. So, what do I wear? The day was already warming up, and I guessed it would be hot by midday—certainly not denim weather—so I chose an Indian muslin dress I had, three-quarter length and sea-green in color, which just about suited my eyes.
